Creating Space for Creation
Creative output like art, music, drama and literature are an important part of mobilizing knowledge from campus, and creative spaces allow the campus community to interact with the public in exciting and innovative ways. On September 21, 2021 Dr. Jennifer Willet, Canada Research Chair in Art, Ecology and Science launched INCUBATOR Art Lab adjacent to the University of Windsor downtown campus on University Avenue, celebrating with a virtual event that featured many downtown neighbours as well as an array of special guests that included singer Jann Arden and local drag performer Epoxy. The studio is a hybrid space combining a fine arts studio with Bio Safety Lab Level 1 (BSL1) biology laboratory, which also acts as a community and cultural hub. Designed with an Art Nouveau decorative/biological marquee and dramatic lighting in visual dialogue with the Capital Theatre across the street, the studio is used by the INCUBATOR team members for building artworks, and hosting workshops and community events. “The intersection of art and science is what we’re all about,” says Dr. Willet. “Having a dedicated space to do science communication through the medium of bioart, while also adding a cultural anchor to Windsor’s downtown core, is extremely exciting.” Ultimately, Willet’s goal is to encourage non-specialists and researchers across disciplines to work with scientists, industry and policymakers in co-determining our shared biotech future. INCUBATOR Art Lab is located at 37 University Avenue East in Downtown Windsor.
